Born in the village of Ust-Menza Krasnochikoisky, southeast of the Soviet Union, Moskalev came from a poor peasant family. His father worked with the transportation of water, and he joined the school in Ulan-Ude, the regional capital. In his spare time, Moskalev attended the school of arts site. However, at age 17 in January 1943, he was named straight from school to the Red Army, becoming a cadet in the Military Academy Trans-Baikal . In May 1944 he was commissioned Lieutenant Junior and sent by train to the front, where he arrived after forty days travel.
Moskalev given command of a platoon of machine guns 176th Regiment Rifles Guard, 46 Army. His baptism of fire took place on August 20, 1944, during the famous Operation Jassy-Kishinev - the Red Army offensive against Axis forces in eastern Romania . The operation's success brought the Romanians to the Allied side. Back in December, in winter, the Soviets were positioned to cross the river Danube near the town of Erchie, Hungary, and Moskalev platoon was chosen to write the first landing force. Starting at 23h crossing of four days, some boats, each carrying 24 soldiers approached the west bank, occupied by the Germans. However, one of the boats came across an electrified fence, killing seven people instantly and giving warning to the enemy.
The Germans then began a real barrier fire with machine guns, mortars and grenades. Moskalev managed to steer his boat near the beach, but it was seen to jump with cold water until the neck. In the crossfire, he still rescued some of his comrades who could not swim, and no waterproof clothing, led the attack on German positions, releasing minimum area necessary for landing the main force. A few days later, Moskalev was wounded in the head and right forearm, staying for two months in hospital. For his important and courageous actions in crossing the Danube, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet awarded him the Golden Star of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 23, 1945. Moskalev still be participating in the battles for Budapest and Vienna, ending the war as company commander.
By moving to the reservation in 1946, Moskalev could fulfill her childhood dream and join the Academy of Arts Irkutsk, and then the Art Institute of Moscow. Your duty towards fellow combat led him to choose war as a source of inspiration for many of his paintings, but he never stuck to a single theme. Held several exhibitions around the country and received the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 1982. Was present in Budapest for the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Hungary and attended (as a guest of the government) to parades in Red Square on May 9, 1996 and 2000.
